Farewell and a new beginning!

Amy Kaleita and OLUWATUYI (“TUYI”) OLOWOYEYE

Today we’re saying farewell, thank you, congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Oluwatuyi Olowoyeye, who is leaving Iowa State to begin his next adventure as a postdoctoral scholar at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Vernon. He will do amazing things there, as he has done here. The first graduate student on the RegenPGC project, he helped set the tone for collaboration and outreach. As a member of the FFAR Fellows Program: Future Leaders for Food & Agriculture, he sought mentoring, mentored others, and charted a path towards impact in this field and beyond. He’s published two papers, one more in review, and one more in the late stages of manuscript. He’s written a successful grant that allowed him to augment his funded research with a related project of his own design. He’s been a leader on campus through our ABE Grad Organization and Tau Beta Pi Iowa Alpha, and nationally with the ASABE – American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Young Professionals Community. I don’t know how he did it all! It’s been a pleasure and an honor to be part of his journey.

It is with great sadness but also with an acknowledgment of a remarkable career and life well-lived that we share the passing of one of our RegenPGC Co-Project Directors, Dr. Cornelia (Neal) Flora. Dr. Flora served as a leader of our Socioeconomic Impacts and Policy Objective, and we appreciate all that she has done to impact RegenPGC and the interests of rural communities.

Introducing youth to perennial groundcover

elementary 4H kids learning about PGC

Research through the eyes of children can’t help but be inspirational. That’s a key takeaway from the latest video featuring our RegenPGC perennial groundcover project.

Maya Hayslett, Iowa State University Extension Crop Sciences Youth Education Specialist, and RegenPGC collaborator produced this video, “Youth Explore Innovative Ag Practices with Iowa 4-H and RegenPGC.” You might ask yourself why a research team is making a youth-focused video. As Maya notes, “Youth are the future workforce and decision-makers, and we know that 4H youth have a history of early adoption of agricultural technology”.

Maya and her team did a fantastic job showing how youth in grades 4-12 can benefit from exposure to science and research through age-appropriate, hands-on activities. Pairing experienced youth educators like Maya with teachers and children demonstrates how children and adolescents’ natural curiosity sparks learning.
