“What if the cure for a dying Gulf was a nap?”

That’s how I opened my FFAR Fellows 3-minute lightning talk, which you can watch here. The talk, part of the FFAR Fellows program: three minutes, one slide, no jargon, and my entire PhD for a general non-scientific audience. (a framework I owe to Melissa Marshall!)

The idea: a cool-season grass that goes dormant in summer could grow beneath corn as a perennial groundcover — holding the soil and reducing nitrogen runoff that feeds the Gulf of Mexico’s dead zone, without competing with the crop.

Distilling it down to one throughline —”a grass that sleeps so the Gulf can breathe” — taught me more about communicating science than almost anything else this year.

Meet new grad student Zoe Gray

Meet RegenPGC’s newest graduate stuent Zoe Gray. Zoe is a master’s student in soil science at the University of Missouri, where RegenPGC CoPd Morgan Davis serves as her advisor. Zoe previously obtained her bachelor’s in environmental science from the University of Missouri.

As an undergrad, Zoe joined the soil judging team, where I competed in numerous competitions that focused on soil chemistry, biology, morphology, physics, and genesis. During her time with the team, Zoe found a desire to learn more about soils and decided to pursue her master’s degree.

As a new member of the RegenPGC team (April 2026), Zoe’s research will focus on the hydraulic conductivity of soils within a perennial groundcover system compared to a system with no ground cover. She will be focusing on hydraulic conductivity as well as water retention curves.

Career Aspirations
After completing her Master’s, Zoe hopes to stay within the research realm and continue working in a lab space that strives to enhance agricultural methods with the integrity of the soil in mind.

It’s spring! It’s always a good time to be open to new ideas on managing our land and soil in row crop production. Our @RegenPGC Perennial Groundcover Project does precisely that. We are working on new approaches to a lot of old issues, such as how to:
◼ Reduce soil erosion (reduced P losses)
◼ Reduce water runoff
◼ Increase water infiltration
◼ Improve soil quality
AND
◼ How to achieve greater stover harvest

New RegenPGC Video Series

We realize some of you may be new to perennial groundcover and its potential for modern #agrictulture. So, we have started a new series to acquaint (or reacquaint) folks with @RegenPGC and our vision for using perennial groundcover in row crop fields for all kinds of interesting benefits.. We acknowledge that some of you may be unfamiliar with perennial groundcover and its potential for modern agriculture. More honors and recognition for the RegenPGC Graduate Education Community

Our 18-member Graduate Education Community (https://www.regenpgc.org/theme-3-education/graduate-education-copy/) never stops impressing us with their dedication to good research and the RegenPGC vision.* But this month shows what an interesting and talented group we have.

Hallie Sandeen (University of Kentucky / Mentor Dr. Erin Haramoto) received a 1st place award at the University of Kentucky’s Integrated Plant & Soil Science Department Fall 2024 Symposium for her poster “Evaluation of Poacae Species and Suppression Application Methods for Permanent Groundcover in Corn.” Earlier this year, Hallie was recognized as the Weed Science Society of America’s 2025 Photographer of the Year! At the Society’s Annual Meeting in Vancouver.

We learned Graduate Student Jack Moran’s (Iowa State University / Mentors Drs. Susan Goggi & Ken Moore) interesting backstory of how he made it from Multyfarnham, Central Ireland, to Iowa State University. Jack’s Iowa State University ‘origin story’ was shared in an article by the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Office for Global Engagement.
